About Us

WHO WE ARE

WE ARE THE MEDICINE ~ WE ARE THE PRAYER

WE ARE STILL HERE

WAY OF THE SACRED MOUNTAIN is an Indigenous-Led, Grassroots, Partnership.

Our vision is centered in acknowledging the truth of what happened and is still happening to our People; Women, Water, and Earth Mother and anything disconnecting us from our authentic ways of being.

Our Grassroots organizing is propelled by our love for our people, to nurture community engagement, cultural revitalization, reclamation of lifeways, restore connection to the land, and heal unresolved intergenerational trauma that often manifests in the Crisis of our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We need to see MMIW/R to its end.

Our mission is to stop ongoing Indigenous Genocide that is taking expression as Indigenous Relatives going Missing and found Murdered. In this way we defend ourselves while holding accountable exploitative people, agencies, and industries by exposing the damage done and calling for restorative justice while we “Walk in Beauty” as vibrant dignified resilience.

PARTNERS IN ONE PRAYER

As we, Teyana Viscarra (Piro-Tewa Pueblo, Apache, Kumiai, European) and Norm Sands (Apache, Yaqui, European) once carried this heartwork on separate paths over the past 7 years, in the visual expressions of MMIW Prayer Runs, Earthen Altars, Shawls and Bandanas, and Red Tipis, Creator has now woven our cumulative work together as ONE PRAYER.

In 2021 while forming this partnership a long term vision emerged for  a beautiful Way forward in contributing our part in mending this sacred hoop with the Red Tipi Healing Project. In the collaborative effort, to create safe spaces within our communities and challenge the inequities that continue to make us invisible. We also want to leave something for the future generations.

WAY OF THE SACRED MOUNTAIN MMIW/R PRAYER

We believe together we are the Prayer, with sustained courageous action ~ breaking the silence that perpetuates the unpunished cycle of violence against indigenous women. Expecting dignified investigative justice for every missing sister with urgency is our human right. Ending the degradation of MMIW/R with everyday unwavering focus, unshakable spiritual composure as we go forward and fight against such defiling betrayal of HUMANITY.

We at Way of the Sacred Mountain realize this is a very traumatic and serious issue yet it is our prayer that our work reflects our values and practices in a way that honors the strengths and resilience of our people.  “We recognize, it’s going to take ALL OF US.”.
